Dry as the desert I came from…

Tuesday, April 1

Since I last announced my plan to train and run the Boston marathon next year, I have simply been getting ready to begin. I have decided on a training plan; Jeff Galloway offers several on his website www.jeffgalloway.com . I like this plan, because it uses a run/walk ratio to aid in recovery all while building endurance. The plan is based on a person’s running pace, so I ran a mile an determined I am in the 12 minute range. I am deviating somewhat from the plan, because I decided I am comfortable running at the ratio that is recommended for a person that averages a 9 minute mile.

I began my running program today by completing the 30 minute run/walk. I totally did not get started the right way. I basically began running on the treadmill. I started sweating and my mouth got dry. I mean REAL DRY. It then hit me that I had had basically next to nothing to drink today. In addition, I had only a cup of coffee this morning and a couple bowls of KIX cereal with skim milk for lunch. I know, I do a nice job taking care of myself. Being a teacher though, one can stay so busy that time is not even taken for a bathroom break. I did learn my lesson. By the time I was done with my run, I felt so weak, jittery, tired, and thirsty! I know that if I am going to train right, I have to train every part of me. I hope to have a nutrition plan in place to parallel my training by this weekend. A few good reads to help with that are:

Jeff’s book-it is a complete guide to his training program: here

A great book from Runner’s World-specifically for women!: here

Another great book for beginner marathoners: here

God obviously thinks water is important too…

“And God said, ‘Let the water under the sky be gathered to one place, and let dry ground appear.’ And it was so.”
