We hope that everyone had a safe and restful Memorial Day weekend…
We had a pretty good weekend considering that we were given some not so
good news last Thursday afternoon. Brad and I took our lab, Bailey, for
his annual eye exam. This exam is annual, because Bailey was treated
for cataracts when he was two years old. During his exam, the doctor
found internal bleeding in Bailey’s right eye. Bloodwork was done and
it was determined that Bailey has a "high" case of Valley Fever. For
our friends and family that do not live here in the Southwest, the
"fever" is common to this area. It is caused by a spore that lives in
the dirt here. Canines are affected more often than humans. Valley
fever is treatable, yet costly. Very few die from Valley Fever. We were
told that Bailey will be on medication for at least one year to treat
his condition. Thank goodness it was caught. Bailey has not shown any
symptoms. We have no idea how long he has had it. We will be getting
our chocolate baby (Brandon) tested in the next week. As far as the
bleeding in Bailey’s eye, Brad took him for another check-up this
afternoon. The doctor says that there is less bleeding. We will
continue to monitor his eye and give him medication that includes eye
drops several times a day. It is thought that the bleeding could be
from his retina trying to detach itself. Poor Bailey! Please pray that
God will heal my baby!
There is a happy ending to the story about our lab friend Sonora. Brad
was able to find a lady that he works with to take her. Although
disappointed, I am very happy that Sonora will be going to a home that
offers several acres available for her to run, run, run! Ann is also a
fellow lab lover who used to have four labs. Lucky gal! Sonora will
still be able to visit her buddies-Bailey and Brandon.
This weekend Brad and I went for an awesome bike ride down the new road
opened by Cienega High School. It was a nice ride. It didn’t however go
without a fall from Deanna! Yes, those tricky clipless pedals helped me
experience the new road first hand. I fell the first time (yes, I said
the first time :) ) when Brad and I made a pit stop. I came to a stop
and did not twist my foot the right way. As I fell, I yelled Brad’s
name. I guess I was in some way hoping he had super powers and could
stop me from falling from his location of about eight feet away. Well,
there was no help from Brad, but he was able to get a great view of my
fall. The second time I fell was while I was waiting for the stoplight
at Escalente and Houghton. How embarrassing! Again, that tricky left
foot! I did have the nicest guy in his monster truck see if I was okay.
I say he was the nicest guy because for one, he didn’t run over me.
Second, he asked me if I was okay and then admitted that that happens
to him all the time. What a guy! All in all, I am fine. I do have some
nice bruises to remind me of how doofy I am on my bike.
Brad and I have decided that our next race will be the El Tour De
Tucson. We are in the process of shopping for a tandem bicycle so we
can ride the tour as "one". We are both really psyched about it.
Independently, I hope to run the Saguaro National Monument race in
September and Brad is looking to do a road race sometime soon.
For all of you who visit the site regularly-thanks! We hope you enjoy
our goofy stories and pics. Drop us a line sometime if you think of any
ways we can improve the site.
