Well, last Sunday we had some excitement. Brad was working in the garden and came across a rattlesnake hiding behind some yard trimmings and a clay pot.
Brad obviously did not see the snake until he was right up on it. It was a small one, perhaps a baby, curled up sleeping. We are told that this time of year is when most snakes are looking for a place to hybernate for the winter. Fortunately, Brad found this little one before one of our labs did. Living here in the desert, we have learned that the young rattlesnakes can be very dangerous because they are unlikely to have control over the amount of venom they release when they bite.
About an hour after finding the snake, our good neighbor Margaret referred us to a nice man who was able to come out an capture the animal for us. He arrived with a pillow case and a small cooler used to hold soda cans. It only took a few swift moves with a shovel for him to reel the snake in. The gentleman was kind enough to drive out to the Saguaro National Monument to release the snake back out into the wild.
